Once a month, ten students from the
student council travel to Niagara Falls on a Saturday morning
to volunteer at the Niagara Falls Community Kitchen. Once there,
students do many different things, including making sandwiches,
wrapping gifts, sorting clothes, cleaning the yard and the building,
serving food and baking cookies. On the way home, the students
are treated to lunch, usually at McDonald's. Volunteering at the
soup kitchen is a great way for the students to meet people from
all different kinds of backgrounds and learn about what it means
to give and help others without expecting (or wanting) compensation.

After the November 3rd
visit, we convinced the McDonald's staff to open up
the playground for us! Maybe they ended up regretting their decision?...

This visit proved that
many hands make light work. Along with the student council kids,
there were about twelve other volunteers. We had a lot of fun
and hung out with out pal, Joe!

During this visit, we set
to stocking the basement with all sorts of new donations that
had arrived the day before. The members also made up "take
out" bags of supplies for families that could use some extra
groceries. It helped to have many hands, since we were able to
form a line and just pass things from one person to the next.
This trip also marked out first visit to Pizza Hut, instead of
the traditional McDonalds! Thanks to Mr. Huff too, for getting
us to and from the soup kitchen safely. Our next trip will not
be until April, so we will put our energies into Winterfest and
planning the "garden renovation" in the middle school.

A special thank you to
Mr. Baker for taking Miss Mahar's spot at the last minute and
filling in as the soup kitchen chaperone. This was our last visit
of the year, and fourteen volunteers showed up to help out! We
are putting our efforts into the Middle School Courtyard renovation
now, so we have to say goodbye to the Community Kitchen until
next year. Everyone has always had a good time and enjoyed making
others happy during our trips to Niagara Falls.
